When and how to apply for an MS program in U.S. Universities?

I want to apply for the MS program in fall 2011 in Industrial Engineering in U.S. Universities. Is it too late for applying and how should I go about that task?

In general, you should apply at least six months before your intended semester of enrollment in American universities. That means, you’ve time to apply for the fall 2011 term. Make sure you file your application before December 2010.

Many universities in the U.S. have Rolling Admission policy, which means you can apply, for example, in January, February or even later. However, with such universities you should first check the prospects for financial aid.

Steps to Apply for an MS Program in U.S. Universities

1. Select four American universities, initially, to apply for an MS program. When you register for the GRE, you can designate the four universities to receive official GRE scores at no extra cost.

To select U.S. universities, identify one or two areas of your aptitude and interest to pursue the graduate program in. Then, list universities that offer the main program or strong electives that match your needs and your academic profile.

The resources you can use to select universities include:
  • Your own research to identify universities through search engines like Google and Bing. Include your intended field of specialization in your keywords and or key phrases.
  • Refer to the print and online journals in your field of aptitude. Review the bio of the authors and see if they are professors in American universities. Write down the names of the author(s) and of the universities.
  • The above info helps you checkout the websites of the universities for details on the graduate program, quality of faculty, areas of research, financial aid potential, on-campus employment chances and other. Of course, if you find a university that meets your educational objectives, you would want to list that university to receive official GRE scores when you register for the test.
  • Check with your friends and relatives who are studying or have studied in U.S. Universities for their recommendation
  • Your professors or colleagues, if you’re working, may also help with you university selection
  • websites like gradschools.com to get more info on universities in the U.S., which offer an MS program you want to pursue
2. Prepare for GRE and TOEFL for at least two to three months and aim to score as high as possible. Take the test in November or before for the following fall semester.

3. Prepare your statement of purpose (SOP) and resume.

4. Register with those U.S. Universities you wish to apply for MS programs in through their websites.

5. Login to a U.S. University website you’ve registered with, using your login ID and password and apply online for the MS program.

6. Depending on the university, you may also have to obtain a letter from your bank, certifying that you’ve the necessary amount in your account to fund your graduate studies. Note while some universities require the financial proof document with your application, other institutions require it only if you’re admitted to their MS program.

7. Request your professors to send the letters of recommendation (LOR) to the universities you wish to apply.

Complete the entire application process before December for the following fall semester.

Educational Loans in the U.S. for International Students

What are the student loan options for international students in America to fund their Master of Science (MS) program in U.S. Universities?

I suggest you to first explore financial aid opportunities in U.S. Universities for your MS program / graduate studies. Although such financial avenues are becoming fewer and fewer for international students, thanks to the weak American economy, you should nevertheless seek teaching / research / graduate assistantship. With it, an U.S. University also awards you an out-of-state tuition waiver. Both those forms of financial aid reduce your cost of graduate education greatly.

In case you must apply for a student loan in the U.S., here are two of the resources:

internationalstudentloan.com
chasestudentloans.com

Keep in mind the lenders require a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident as a cosigner. You also require a social security number, which the International Students Office, at the American university, helps you get one – whether or not you wish to apply for a loan.

Rolling admission in U.S. Universities for an M.S. Program

I want to apply for M.S. in Environmental Engineering in U.S. Universities for fall 2011. While some universities specify a closing date for applications, others say they have a rolling admissions policy? What is the difference between the two?

Universities that give a closing date for applying to their M.S. programs compare each applicant who meets their minimum admission requirements with the pool of applicants. Top U.S. universities usually follow this route to admit students and award financial aid.

American educational institutions that use the rolling admission policy, process applications on an on-going basis. Once the Graduate Admissions Committee fills all the seats for a particular M.S. program, it may not review additional applications for that semester. Even with this admission procedure, you've to fulfill at least the minimum admission requirements.

All the best with your graduate education goals.

A Quantitative problem for GRE / GMAT

Here's a GRE / GMAT type quantitative problem:

A man sees the price tag of Rs. 15 per raw mango in a grocery shop. He wonders the profit on each mango must be 30%. Assuming his assessment is true, what is the cost price of a raw mango?

A. 10.60
B. 11.53
C. 12.21
D. 11.10

Answer: B

This is a straightforward problem. Here are three of the ways to find the answer to the question:

Solution I:

Let

S = Sale price
C = Cost price
P = Profit

So, percent profit is

(S-C)/C = P

(15-C)/C = 30/100

15-C = 30/100*C

C = 11.53

Solution II

Working from the answers:

Add 30% to, for example, answer choice B = 11.53 + (30/100) * 11.53 = 14.989.

The above value is closest to the sale price, which is 15.

Solution III

Profit (P) is 30%, so sale price (S) is 130% of the cost price (C):

S = 130/100*C

15 = 130/100*C

C = 11.53

How to Write E-Mail Letters to Professors in U.S. Universities to Pursue MS in Specific Research Areas?

I have been writing to professors in various U.S. universities, expressing my research interests in the computer science areas to pursue MS in CS, but I am receiving very few responses.  What may be the reason, and is there any specific way I should write the e-mail?

The response rate you’re receiving isn’t unusual.  Professors in American universities receive much e-mail from prospective students for which they don’t have the time to reply to all mails because of their professional commitments.  Students can expect a reply if their profile and research interests have a good match with the professors' needs and the professors are actively seeking an MS applicant(s) to fill an available research slot and or to work with in the graduate program.

Whether a professor chooses to reply to your e-mail also depend on how you present your academic credentials and research interests.

To send an effective e-mail to professors in U.S. universities, review their research work and interests.  List those that match with your aptitude and needs.  Then, study their research work in detail.  Identify the salient features and accomplishments of the professors’ research.

Use the above background info as the foundation to write the letter.  In it, concisely talk about the professor’s research work and highlight how it as an excellent synergy with your research interests.  Request the opportunity to work in his / her research area(s) in the MS program.

At this stage, do not ask for an RA.  If the professor likes your profile and educational goals, he / she may award an RA to you from the first / second semester.  Be sure to mention briefly in your message about your academic accomplishments, research potential and internship and work experience (if any) details.  Present the entire content clearly and succinctly.

You may also want to attach your resume to the e-mail.  Alternatively, if you’ve a website that details your educational achievements, project work, published papers and work experience (if any) and other, give a link to the same in your e-mail and request the professor to visit your site and review your qualifications.

Info on GPA, Job Prospects and other in the Context of an MS Program in U.S. Universities

How to find out about my undergraduate GPA?

It is critical to know the U.S. university-equivalent of your GPA / aggregate percentage for your own assessment of your chances of admission and financial aid.

If an American university website doesn’t specify the percentage-GPA conversion formula, you would have to send an e-mail to the graduate school and request info about the same.  You may also want to send a CC to your Department and the International Students Office.  Don’t forget to mention your aggregate percentage and the average percentage in the last two years of your studies in your query.

Organizations like WES (wes.org) offer services like converting your aggregate percentage into GPA for a fee.

What are the job prospects after MS?  Is there any compulsory training post-MS?

Your employment prospects entirely depend on your approach to finding a job, field of study, aptitude, GPA, projects and the job scenario in the U.S.  Of course, you need a bit of luck too.

There is no compulsory training after MS.  However as an international student on an F-1 visa, you can work in the U.S.—in your field of study—for about 18 months through the optional practical training (OPT) route.

Remember, you’ve to maintain legal status throughout your graduate program to avail OPT.  Further, you should find a job on your own.

Is there campus recruitment in U.S. universities?

Most U.S. universities do have campus recruitment, but companies would mainly hire U.S. citizens / permanent residents.

What are the prospects of employment after MS in India?

Excellent.  Some of the top-notch companies that hire electrical engineers are Intel, Motorola and Texas Instruments.  They all have a base in India.

I hear that students from India and China score higher grades than local students.  Is it because Indians and Chinese work harder?

Most students from India and China do score top grades.  Are they relatively higher?  It depends on the U.S. University, whether the American student works full-time and studies part-time and other.  Keep in mind that all students have to work hard and smart in their graduate program and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Can I take courses beyond that required for an MS degree and complete graduate studies in one-and-a-half years?

Yes, you can.  Most American universities require that international students enroll for a minimum of nine credits / three courses (one course = three credits (usually)) each semester.  The maximum number of courses you can take would be either 12 or 15 credits per semester.

In the summer semester, most universities give you the flexibility to register only for six credits.

Be aware that if you take maximum number of courses it would affect your health and grades.  Further, if you’re an RA / TA, managing work and studies can be challenging.

Also, note that it will cost you more money for each additional course you enroll.

When do U.S. universities close for holidays?

U.S. universities close for spring and Christmas break and national holidays like Thanksgiving Day.  In the summer semester, only a few courses are offered and some courses may be available for registration only in the summer.

Where do international students usually eat?

Most international students cook their own food, as it works out cheaper.

I want to do MS in Electrical Engineering in the U.S.  I did my B.E. in Electronics with 3.24 GPA (according to the university %-GPA conversion method).  I completed my B.E. in July 2009, and got selected in a software company.  But due to recession, the company was not giving the call letter.  So, I made up my mind to do MBA, prepared for the exams and scored moderate marks.  I now wish to pursue MS in the U.S.  I haven’t taken GRE and TOEFL yet, but honestly feel that I would be able to do pretty well.  So, I want these questions to be answered:

When does the academic year start in American universities?
What are the parameters to be able to get scholarship?
What is the fee range?
Will the one year gap be an issue (after July 2009, I was waiting for the call letter and preparing for the MBA exams)?

Academic Year in U.S. Universities

The start of the academic year in most universities is the fall term (September – October).  The fall term is when most scholarship and assistantship are awarded to international (and American) students.

However, the majority of U.S. universities admit international students in the winter (Jan) and summer terms (May-June) also.

What are the Parameters that U.S. Universities consider to Grant Assistantship?

The parameters include:
  • Above average academic record
  • GRE and TOEFL scores
  • Project and academic accomplishments
  • Work experience (if any)
  • Recommendation letters
  • Personal essay / statement of purpose (SOP)
  • Research / academic potential
What is the Range of Fees in American Universities?

It varies widely from university-to-university.  Private institutions are far more expensive than public / state universities.  Consider Rs. 15,00,000 as the minimum amount you need (without assistantship) for graduate education in the U.S.  The websites of U.S. universities give details of the tuition and fee.

Will the One Year Gap after Undergraduate Education matter to U.S. Universities?

It will not.  However, you’ve to explain to the U.S. Consular Officer during the visa interview about your one year gap.

Is Doing MS in Technical Communications in the U.S. a Good Idea?

I am currently working as a technical writer. I am very keen to do an MS in technical communications from an university in the US. Maybe on-site, and not on-line.

However, I have been researching on the long term value of acquiring this education. I found an advice on this on a website, which frankly wasn't very encouraging.  What do you think?

If you’ve the aptitude and real passion in technical writing, you should pursue an MS / MA in Technical Writing.

As the cost of graduate education is high in the U.S., you should plan to pursue an MS in Technical Writing with financial aid.  That way, you don’t have to worry about using your own or parents’ funds or taking an educational loan.

Try to score as high as possible on the GRE, get strong recommendation letters and write a powerful personal essay / statement of purpose.  These and an above average academic record open the door for financial aid.  Further, the number of applicants for MS in Technical Writing is not many in comparison to other fields like computer science.  So, lesser competition for admission and funding means your prospects for the same are high.

Will you get a job after your MS?  It depends on your
  • Work experience (if any)
  • Performance in the graduate program
  • The field of your undergraduate degree
  • The employment scenario in the U.S. market
  • Your approach to and perseverance in finding work in the U.S.

Here is what the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2010-11 Edition says about the job outlook for technical writing (Source: www.bls.gov/oco/ocos319.htm):

"
Employment of technical writers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations as the need to explain a growing number of electronic and scientific products increases. Job prospects are expected to be good for those with solid writing and communications skills and a technical background. "

However, be aware that the job outlook above would apply mainly for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.

Even if you don’t find a job in the U.S., your MS degree has value worldwide.  And, the experience of studying and getting an MS in the U.S. can prove to be a rewarding milestone in your life.

The key is you should secure financial aid to fund your graduate program in Technical Writing.  You must get tuition waiver and assistantship at least from the second semester, if not from the first.

How Important is an SOP / Personal Essay in Admission to an MS Program in U.S. Universities?

What role does a statement of purpose (SOP) / personal essay play in admission to an MS program in U.S. universities and what should the essay focus on?

A statement of purpose / personal essay is a very important component of your application for admission to a MS / graduate program in universities in U.S.A.

A well-written graduate school essay sheds light on your personal traits and ambitions in an effective way. In essence, your essay should convince the admission committee of your need for advanced education and talent to succeed in and contribute to the MS / PhD program.

Remember, your SOP can make or break your application. It’s essential, therefore, you craft an essay that serve as a stepping stone for admission to the MS program in U.S. universities. Further your essay can give you a competitive edge, when applicants with the same percentage / GPA and test scores as you apply for admission and financial aid.

Focus of a SOP / Personal Essay for Admission to an MS Program in U.S. Universities

Write about you: The admission committee wants to know more about you, beyond your academic and work accomplishments, test scores and recommendation letters.

Your essay should have info on such things as the opportunities and difficulties you’ve faced in your life and how these have made you a better person; educational and professional accomplishments and academic areas of aptitude and passion and how you will use these academic specializations to nurture your career goals.

Write Relevant Answers: In case of a close-ended essay where you’ve to answer specific questions, read each question twice, if not thrice. Then, answer the same. After you’re finished, review your answers to ensure these aptly give the info sought by the application, and just that.

Write in a Clear and Concise Way: Use simple and straightforward words to pen your essay. Grand vocabulary don’t impress the admission committee. Polish your essay by pruning redundant or irrelevant phrases and sentences. Make sure to link your paragraphs cohesively.
